Ocean Training helps swimmers build confidence and develop practical open-water skills, including wave navigation, ocean swimming, rip-current awareness, and beach safety.
Training takes place in the Santa Monica ocean area. The exact meeting location and arrival instructions will be provided before your session.
Yes. Ocean Training is not a learn-to-swim program. Participants must meet the minimum swimming prerequisites for their program before entering the ocean.
Ocean Training is available to swimmers who meet the age and swimming requirements for their selected program. Requirements may vary by training level.
Depending on their level, swimmers may work on ocean entries and exits, navigating waves, open-water swimming, body positioning, rip-current awareness, endurance, and overall ocean confidence.
Sessions are led by an experienced LA County Ocean Lifeguard with training in ocean safety, rescue, swimming, and open-water conditions.
Swimmers should arrive in appropriate swimwear with a towel, water, sunscreen, and any required training gear. Additional equipment recommendations will be provided when necessary.
Ocean conditions are evaluated before and throughout every session. Training may be modified, moved, postponed, or canceled when surf, currents, weather, water quality, or other conditions make the planned activity unsafe.
The instructor makes the final decision regarding whether ocean conditions are appropriate for the scheduled activities. A session may be modified even if the beach remains open to the public.
For younger participants, a parent or authorized responsible adult may be required to remain nearby for the duration of the session. Any age-specific requirements will be communicated before training.
Cancellations must be made at least 48 hours before the scheduled session. Cancellations within 48 hours are considered late cancellations and require full payment. Instructor-initiated cancellations due to unsafe ocean conditions are handled separately.
No. Ocean Training is an independent Seabass Aquatics program focused on developing ocean swimming, safety, confidence, and open-water skills. Participation does not represent enrollment in, affiliation with, or certification by a Junior Lifeguard program.
